Justin's first game happened to be a tournament. Here is Justin dribbling the ball, looking for a pass, and rebounding. We finished with 5th place and had a great time. I had 6 points 11 rebounds the entire tournament.

Its New Years Eves Eve and Dad is just getting back from a ride with his new bike gear. Dad says hes like the the post man. Neither rain, nor wind, nor sleet, etc. will keep him off of the bike. He has a goal of 4000 miles on the bike for 2009! Lets see if he can keep it up!

Game #1 - Coaches Corner

As offensive coordinator, Jake runs a very quick game style with a no-huddle approach.

This is a rare moment when there is a time-out for a chance to get the boys together a true huddle. Because of the no-huddle approach, the plays happen very fast, and Jake must be ready with the next play immediately after the last play finishes. No time to think it over...as a result he is thinking on his toes and the after game video is helpful in really getting a look at what worked and what didn't.

Here the head coach, Andy Kahut and Jake confer on the best approach to a recent play.
Jake is good at bestowing many words of wisdom on the boys...here is Justin and another coach's son on the receiving end of that precious wisdom.
Another of the few rare moments when Jake is able to be out there giving hands on instruction.
The game ended in a win for our boys...31 to 14! 1st win of the season looks good for the offensive coordinator. Takes a bit of pressure off...but no rest for Jake...he is already planning how to fix the few offensive blunders for game #2 next Saturday. Stay tuned here for more updates on the progress of our season.

Justin got a major wound when playing a bit of football with a friend and at this game he broke it open again. He is VERY proud of this wound - he's hoping it will leave a scar so he can say, "Oh, that's an old football injury."

This was our first official game of the season against a team from South Barlow which is in Gresham. We left our house at 11:30am to be at the field to practice by 1:00pm for a start time of 2:00pm.

Justin is on this end (#81) just before the team got down on the line to start the play. His position is Left-End. (Since this is Christy writing - I know that means he's on the left end and blocks - but I am slowing learning more all the time about football.) I should be an expert by the end of the season since we get every game on video for Jake and Justin to watch over and over and over again analyzing plays.
During a play and Justin is on this end - I believe this is one is called "16 Power".
Justin is on this end again...he is blocking #3 if you look closely.

Justin's Football Career

This is just the start of Justin's Hall of Fame Football Career. He has decided to play football and as a result, Jake got asked to help coach. Not only could he not let Justin down, (who by the way pumped his fist and said, "Yes, I think it would be so awesome if Dad would coach!") but was also put in the postion of being Offensive Coordinator. So- the boys go off to practice four nights a week, Jake has coaches meetings on Friday nights, and Saturdays are games. By the way - Justin's position is tight-end.

Meanwhile, the girls stay at home, keep the boys full with yummy dinners, wash their clothes drenched with sweat and rain, and be the encouragement they need when they get home and are thoroughly tired! It's a family affair! This is the season of life we are in...and we are tired but enjoying our kids' lives to the fullest!

Is it a surprise that Jake's voice can be heard above all the other coaches, and even by the parents on the sidelines watching practice? When Jake calls a play...the boys hear it!

Just so you know how into this he is, Jake has several key plays taped to the door of his office so he can glance up and go over the play again in his head that he will be teaching the boys that night.

Above, Justin, the tight-end, is the player closest to the camera on this end of the line. He is the one that doesn't have any bare legs showing, wearing his game socks, so that makes it a little easier to pick him out until we get his name printed on the back of his jersey.
Above...Jake called a play and the boys are getting into position, he is standing in the top right corner here with the head coach observing how well the boys pull it off.
Above - Jake is once again barking out what went wrong on the last run of this play. For those of you who know football well...maybe you can figure out what play they are set to do. I have no idea! (Mom)

Hanging in Between Practice Drills

On these hot days the boys were encouraged to drink loads of water. Justin listened.
I was told once when I tried to help Justin out of his pads and shirt, "I can't be seen having my mom help me!" Well, a close second is being photographed with one of his coaches helping.
Let's see...Jake's mouth is open... everyone around him is laughing...hmmm...do you think a smart remark just came out of Jake's mouth? Ding, ding, ding...you are correct!

Is He Working Hard Enough?

With having his second week of practice in 90 - 100 degree weather, Justin and the rest of the team (not to mention the coaches) were drenched in sweat by the end of practice. Justin was pretty proud of the fact that he got so sweaty, so he had to show it off for the camera, although Ashley and Christy were not so thrilled with the smell of him when he got home. Football season has arrived!

Bridge Pedal over Portland

Alright. First thing Sunday morning Justin and Jake got up and ready to leave for the Portland Bridge Pedal. It is a pretty incredible thing really...... the city of Portland shuts down nearly all bridges for about 4-5 hours and there is a huge charity riding event.
Justin and Dad decided to do the 24 mile ride that covered 8 bridges. Our family has planned to do this ride for 3 straight years and this is the fist time that anyone actually made it.

The camelback. If you look closely, you can see the camelback that Justin is wearing on his back. For a ride this short, I normally wouldn't bring a camelback but Justin was so excited to wear and drink from it that we let him wear it. I filled it up with some ice and about 60 oz. of water thinking that would be plenty.

Well.... I was wrong about 60 oz being enough. On just the second bridge (about 4 miles (maybe 5 miles TOPS!!) Justin told me that all the water was gone!
We literally had to stop at the first rest stop and re-fill the camelback. Unbelievable.
Before noon that day Justin visited the restroom a total of SIX times.
Next time we will have to monitor the water intake a little better.

Rock Climbing?

The kids decide to rock climb on our last time to the beach. It was a foggy day as the sun had decided to go away and wasn't coming back. You could hardly see the ocean and the beach. It was strangely eerie, watching people come into focus on the beach when they would walk into our view.

I love the Oregon Coast in August.

I can't leave them out, but I don't know exactly where to put these pictures. Yes, we are biased about our kids and we freely admit it.

The first two are in the kitchen. We love it when the kids spend time on the stools visiting with us when we are busy in making something.

Here the kids are at the beach. You can just see the mischeiveous look on Justin's face. Yeah.... he never gets in trouble.

Ashley collecting shells. It never fails that when we come home from the beach we have a bag stashed somewhere in the car with wacky looking shells, maybe some kelp flowers, rocks, and whatever other interesting items she can find.

By the way, about that bag that is stashed in the car, it is not uncommon for this bag to be left somewhere in Ashley's room for maybe a month or two. At this point we find the bag out of sheer necessity as the contents of the bag begin stinking.... badly. After that, the bag is banished to the burn barrel. So much for the shell collection.

Ashley's Castle vs. the Ocean

Every time we make it to the beach there is the obligatory "let's make a castle and watch as the surf finally overtakes it."
This time it was Ashley taking the reins of the design and build for our castle.

You can see in the background Justin just hanging out and burying himself in the sand, letting Ash do all the work.

It doesn't matter how big we make the moats or how large we make the castle the pounding of the surt always win.

The Girls

The water is cold. We went down to the surf and maybe got a couple of toes wet. I tried to get Christy closer to the water but to no avail.

Gorgeous day at the beach. We just enjoyed reading some books, watching the kids, helping build sand castles, soduku, and each others company.

Justin laying in the water. What you don't see in the picture is that there are surfers that have full body suits (head, hands, feet- everything is covered) and Justin just has his shorts on. The water temperature hovered between 49F to 50F.

I am not joking when I say you wouldn't be in the water with him.

The water at Lincoln City is absolutely freezing!! It's hard to believe how cold it is unless you slipped your foot in the water. How our kids can frolic in the ocean blows us away.

Literally... they will stay in the surf for hours. After about two waves, my feet hurt so bad that it's back to the lounge chair.

Pepperoni Bread

So, last Christmas when we visited in Idaho for the holiday season, Uncle Rob made Pepperoni Bread for the family to enjoy.

Ashley has been begging us to let her make Pep Bread and we figured a meal at the coast was a perfect time.

I know this picture won't be a shock to most of you.... but for those of you who don't know to what I am refering, Christy is shown here grabbing more cheese that will be liberally spread on the Pep Bread.

Do I own a cheese factory? One would think so.... Yes.

Once the process started, everybody wanted to join in.

Mom gives tepid approval of the work being done by the novice chefs.

Thankfully, under the ever viligant eye of Mom the Pep Bread became an instant hit. Thanks Uncle Rob.

Justin Singing????

Well, Justin has taken to singing with his Ipod on and giving us memorable performances. I don't recall the song, but the combination of song and dance was truly inspiring.

It's funny because it's like Justin doesn't realize that we can all hear him when he sings. Off tune, mumbled words, wrong words...... it makes all of us laugh.

Bike Riding at the Coast

The kids assured me that bringing the bikes to the coast for the weekend was important to them. So, I found a way to get all four bikes on the car (no small feat) and off we went.

Based on the odometer on Ashley's bike, by Sunday morning the kids had rode a whopping 2.2 miles. That translates into about 10 minutes of riding.
I am so glad I went through all that trouble.

Pool Supervision

Okay, maybe not ever vigilant but I do watch the kids while doing a Soduku. Yes, I still do the puzzles. Maybe not at the blistering rate that I did last year, but I do them on vacation and in airports and the like.

Yesterday, I didn't have the camera out when Ashley made several jumps into the pool. Today... we were ready.

Although this is a good picture of Ashley jumping in the pool, I must digress. Yesterday, I coaxed Ashley into giving me a true belly-flop. And when I say true, I mean full extension, parallel to the water, chest, face, arms, legs all RED from smacking into the water.
Today with the camera, she wouldn't do it. Yesterday hurt too much (and believe me it had to hurt.... the red welts lasted nearly 30 minutes!!) If I was only a better father and had the camera ready. Darn.

Yes, we are so proud of our son. Well done Justin!!

The toilet. Right. Well, we had to put it somewhere so right now it is residing on our deck. The toilet has been designated the official "time-out" destination when things get out of control. We have had to send Dad to "time-out" twice this last week.

We have here Christy concentrating hard on the balancing beam event at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Notice the look of determination on her face as she works to maintain her balance on the 2" x 6".
Christy and Jake love their bikes. That fact that both bikes live in the house is testament to this. Here is Christy's bike after a nice cleaning gleaming in the kitchen.

For those who are wondering, Christy has a CAAD 5 bike from Cannondale. Very nice little machine.

Ping-Pong Wars

After Justin got back from camp last week, he started talking some junk about his ping-pong prowness. This week he has had his buddy Trevor over every day and they have been spending some time at the upstairs table beating up on each other. Justin is regularly playing right now and we can see his game is getting better.

But, the inevitable has happened. He has gotten a little cocky- and wanted a shot at Dad. So, last night we have the first round of ping-pong wars between the boys of the house.

Justin getting after it here..... by the way, last week the American Lung Association sent Justin a "Reach the Beach" jersey for the ride we did in May. Justin is pretty proud of the jersey (as he should be) and wears it fairly regularly.

Yes, things got close and Dad had to start working hard at the table to keep pace with Justin.

At the end of the evening, Dad won the first stage 2 games to 1. It was close.... real close. Game three went to overtime before Dad prevailed 23-21. Both boys were sweating when they came back downstairs so we think they were working hard.

Bathroom Remodel: Say it isn't so!!

Many of you know that we had a total house remodel in 2004. I mean everything was remodeled and updated.... except one bathroom. The reason, well, our family was living outside in a van down by the river....

No, no... wrong story. We actually lived in an RV and had the use of one bathroom which we decided to not remodel.
So, the other day we notice the floor is a little soft and squishy around the toilet in the bathroom. We were planning to remodel this bathroom... just not this year.

But, as you can see once you start something, well you can see for yourself.

Here we are disconnecting the sink, water, and drain so we can remove the cabinet. Justin is pumped up about the thought of breaking something.... anything.

What you don't see here is that shortly.... I am mean minutes after this picture, during the pulling of this piece of plywood, I shear off the copper pipe fitting that was the water supply for the toilet. Yes, water sprayed everything. Water spraying necessitates a sprint outside to the pump-house to shut off the water.

Yes... that's right. Copper. On a Sunday night no less.

So, this started a chain of event which included shutting off the water to the house for several hours, a trip to Home Demo for repair parts, Justin taking a shower at Grandma's.... you know... standard stuff when one breaks a water line.

And for those of you that want to know, yes... I did get the repair done that night and NO, I am not a plumber.

The Axmakers have built pretty much everything on the property..... so we are familiar with them and they are familiar with us. It works out fairly well.

The George Washington Inn

We took a trip to Victoria BC through the coaxing and generosity of Jake's boss. He generously paid for our hotel in Victoria and it was something we had talked about doing for years. On our way up, we planned to stay over one night in Port Angeles, Washington and through my internet searches I found a wonderful inn that is an exact replica of Mount Vernon, George Washington's home. It was inspired not only by George Washington's home, but also by Washington himself and his love for the Lord and his country.

Here is the view driving up to the Inn.

Our Anniversary Ride

The morning of our anniversary, we woke to a scrumptious breakfast homemade by our gracious host. Then we found a local bike trail and headed off on a quick bike ride. The trail we found was actually meant more for walking or possibly mountain bikes. So- it was a bit rough but we did a small loop and headed back to clean up and head over on the ferry to Canada. We are standing in front of the Inn here.

On the ferry ride to Victoria it was smooth sailing...but on the way back over to Washington there was a strong wind and made for a very rocky ride.
The view of the Olympic Mountains can be seen and was the usual view every morning as we looked out our balcony towards the Washington border. Our hotel was positioned just right to give us a nice view.

Jake's Ride Around Town

Jake took advantage of the gorgeous weather we had to do a nice 30 mile loop around the island. If you look closely you will see above Jake on his bike as he is turning the corner to head back to our hotel. You can see him in his orange shirt with his back pack on.
Above you can see the map of the island with Victoria at the bottom and near the top Butchart Gardens, where Jake and I rode. Then if you follow the purple route down south of Victoria and then on around the coast and up to where it joins the green line. That was the route Jake took - it took him into some pretty good hills above Victoria, then Jake rode down the green line, which was an actual bike trail called the Galloping Goose. Victoria is very bike friendly, which was really nice for us.

Our 16th Anniversary

At dinner, this is a few minutes before our meal came...which was Lobster for me and a nice prime rib for Jake. It was very tasty!!
Jake's boss bought us a special anniversary package at our hotel for the first night that included a bottle of Champagne, a book about love, a box of chocolates, and a special turn-down service that was rose petals all over our pillows. Very romantic!

Ride to Butchart

Jake and I decided we wanted to visit Butchart Gardens while in Victoria, and what better way than on bikes. So, we found a route from our hotel and rode our bikes to the gardens, locked the bikes up while walked around gardens, had lunch, enjoyed each others' company, and then rode back to our hotel. All said and done the round trip ride was around 35 miles. Here is one of the gorgeous views we had along the way.

The top one is the view from our hotel room, the middle picture is the marina at night, and the bottom one here is the downtown skyline taken from our hotel room. The very large regal building in the center is the Empress Hotel - they serve "high tea" there every day. Very neat city!

This picture was taken on Sunday, June 8th when there was a "Sun Dog" around the sun. They say it looks like a "halo" around the sun and Ashley was determined to get a picture of it. Wow! What a shot!

Ashley noticed the beautiful view of Mt. Hood coming home from the store and asked if I would take her home to grab the camera so she could get a shot or two. Here is one of her shots.
Ashley is starting to really look for good shots...it's fun to see her taking an interest in photography.

5th Grade Honor Choir

Here is the scoop. Justin and a couple of his buddies got selected to be in an honor choir for the Canby School District. So, in case we didn't have enough to do in our already busy schedules, we found ourselves going to a handful of practices in Canby and then the big performance. We made sure that Justin was showered and hair combed before he left the house. No guarantees on how he looked by the time we got him to the performance.

Here the choir (probably about 50 kids) is sitting on the stage warming up.

During the actual performance. There were about 5 or 6 different choirs invited to sing and if I am honest..... I rather enjoyed their singing.

So, Memorial Day in Oregon. Keep in mind that we understand that we live in Oregon. We expect rain basically from October to April. Having said that, END OF MAY IS NOT THE TIME FOR RAIN!!!!

So, we had rain on Monday. No garden work. No grilling on the deck. No sitting in the sun. Instead, the girls went shopping. I know... I know.... a shocking development.

This is the picture of Ashley unloading the car after shopping. I am sure that you noticed that Ashley is taller than Christy...... just thought I would point that out.

Springwater Corridor

I decided to try a new route this Saturday. So, the kids and Christy dropped me off downtown Portland near OMSI. You can see one of my mechanical crew (both kids are my "mechanics") help get me ready for the ride.

The route I rode today is called the Springwater Corridor. The trail starts basically as OSMI and ends near Boring. The trail is a busy one, so getting a picture without anyone but myself was tough for my photography crew. (Yes, I have a photography and mechanical crew...... I need alot of support).
You can see the beautiful skyline, Willamette River, and Hawthorne Bridge in the background.

After dropping me off, the family did some shopping and then drove out to meet me at the agreed pick up point, Eagle Fern Park near Estacada. On the way, Ashley took some pictures of the beautiful day. The forecast called for thundershowers, so we were pleasantly surprised to get what you see.

After the ride, Jake had to catch a ride with Grandma and Grandpa back to where our car was parked - so I stayed at the beach...which gave Ashley and Juse a chance to play and climb this huge sand dune...twice!! It's hard to see them but they are up there somewhere.

Jake and I made it to the finish line!! YEAH!! Our 55 mile ride was tough in a couple spots, but overall, we endured and it was great to finish such an accomplishment with my groom. Here we are putting our bikes in the "bike corral" and then congratulations all around for us and our friends, Kip and Jenny. Now...off to a big dinner... need to replenish all those calories burned!

Reach the Beach...During...Lunch Stop

Jake and I had 3 rest stops along the ride. Here we are at the second stop...Grande Ronde where Juse and Grandpa started...eating lunch. Most stops included quick loads of carbs and sugars in addition to lots of water. This stop actually had a meal...baked potatoes with all the fixings. It was perfect. We did notice though when we stopped how much hotter it felt - no breeze - so quickly got back on the road. We arrived here 1.5 hours after Justin and Grandpa left.

Justin and Grandpa participated in the Reach the Beach ride as well.. they started from Grande Ronde Indian Wellness Center and their ride was 26 miles - which is about half-way into our ride from Amity. Here they are getting ready...Justin on his GT bike and Grandpa on his Recombant bike. Ashley and Grandma were there to take pictures and drive a car to the beach so we would have transportation back. Go Grandpa and Justin!!!

Reach the Beach...Before...Start Point Amity

The big day arrived for our Reach the Beach ride, Saturday, May 17th. It was our 55 mile ride to the beach for Jake and I. We rode with some friends that we met through the kids' school, Kip and Jenny Schuening, shown here. They picked us up to travel to our start point...Amity High School in Amity, OR. Our start time was 9:00 AM and we arrived there at about 8:15 AM so that we could get set up...unload bikes and additional gear, check tire pressure, etc. Here Jake and Kip are perparing the bikes, while Jenny and I are chatting and comparing bikes...how cute they are...what size they are...yada yada... then we were off at 9:00 AM.

Jake is really enjoying his Specialized bike. This shows not only the look of his bike, but also how lightweight the bike really is. It's made of carbon fiber and is quite light. It makes for a very fun ride!

Street Surfing Challenge

The kids decided that they didn't have enough room to street surf and ride the scooter on just the carport - they needed to create this handy lane connecting the two cement surfaces. They scrounged every piece of flat plywood they could from Dad's shop to make their lane. Then they had time trials once the course was agreed upon. They had a lot of fun - and got out a lot of energy!

Here are Jake, Ashley, and Justin taking turns wearing an old pair of Jake's military issue glasses. They are thick and durable to last while serving in the Army, and they are usually called "Birth Control" glasses. Hmmmm... I wonder why? The kids really thought it was fun to be goofy in these!

JA Biztown

Justin's class went on a field trip recently that was to a place called Junior Achievement Biztown where the kids learn to run a business, including taking out a business loan that must be paid back by the end of the day. They learn to write checks, deposit paychecks (after taxes) into their bank accounts and write checks to pay for business expenses. There was a mayor and City Hall, the kids all got lunch breaks, just a lot of regular real world experience. It was pretty neat! Here are a few pictures of the set-up that this place has for this. All the phones between the businesses work, the computers work and are interlinked with the bank computers, it is quite the elaborate field trip. Best trip by far I have ever been on with the kids. The one thing the kids said that they remembered the most...lunch breaks are never long enough to get everything done that you need to! Amen!

Justin is sitting at his desk as one of the bankers of Keybank during Biztown. He was very careful to do his job correctly. He was the savings officer and during particular times of the day, his job was to track down any citizens who did not contribute to a savings account and put the pressure on them...just like a banker.

Bow down to Washington...the school song for the Washington Huskies...and very appropriate for our drive home as we purposefully took the 520 floating bridge so that we could view Husky Stadium. What a beautiful sight! Sorry Aunt Corrie - We love the huskies!

While at the conference, we heard a Christian band called "The Lads" who are from New Zealand and Ashley really loved them. We went back to their booth several times to get information about their band and Ashley took one opportunity to get a picture with two members of the band - Bjorn & Mark.

Girls' Weekend Away

Here are the three of us who went to Seattle for the Christian Education Conference. Me(Christy), My friend Jami, and of course Ashley. This is us at dinner at a pizza shop in downtown Bellevue. We had a great time bonding and hanging as girlfriends!

Here is Ashley after swimming in the hotel pool along with a few friends from church who also attended the conference. They all got in the pool and swam in a large circle trying to create a giant whirlpool...Ashley said they really did make one.

Championship Saturday

Okay, you would think that after showing pictures of the first two rounds of the playoffs, that I would have great pictures of the last game and a recap of the action. But I don't. It was near 6:00pm when the game started and I was pictured out. So, what you see here is Justin and his buddies Wyatt and Trevor goofing around between games. Both of these boys live close and are good friends for Justin.

The other picture shows Justin on the phone talking to Christy. Both Christy and Ashley were in Seattle all weekend at a Christian Education conference. I didn't really listen to much of the conversation, however did hear Justin telling Christy that he "got the first double-double in his career."
Ha! His career! I thought that was funny.

Oh yeah, they won the tournament in impressive fashion. So much for a riveting recap.

The first game of the day was a breakout game for Justin. He scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. I am NOT joking. It was a tremendous performance!! The team won and went to the second round in the championship bracket.

I spent more time than I care to think about this weekend at a tournament for Justin in Estacada. The important part is that I told Justin to dominate the paint just like his favorite player on the Washington Huskies Jon Brockman. Jon Brockman is 6'-7" and 260lbs and plays like a man possessed on the low block.
For those of you who are wondering, Justin is 4'-8" and 90 lbs........ basically the same body type.

Johann Sebastian Bach

Well, we didn't realize this at home, but Justin had auditioned for the part of Johann Sebastian Bach for the school play. The scene he played was him talking with a couple of contemporaries and found out his wife died. The crowd left Justin all by himself on the stage and he sang a sad solo.
Biggest Applause of the Night!!! We couldn't have been more surprised or proud!!
He did a GREAT job..... although in a couple of years that solo won't be in his vocal range if you know what I mean!

Justin Wins for Best Tasting Healthy Entree

Here Justin and his friend Tyer man their presentations making sure they are ready for the judges at all times.
Here one of the judges tastes Justin's chowder. This particular judge as well as another judge came back twice to taste the chowder. Justin also had to answer questions about what was in the recipe, how he put it together, and why he chose this recipe. Justin was sure to tell them that the reason he chose to add halibut to the recipe was because his Dad, Jake, brought it back from Alaska.
Justin recieving the award, a set of culinary tools of his very own, in addition to quite a few other prizes.
Justin along with all the district finalists, and standing next to the other winners in the dessert, and healthy snack catagories.
The six winners...for all the catagories. Way to go Justin!! We are so proud of you!!

America'a Next Top Chef Is....

Justin entered a cooking contest at school. The total entries were over 100 and Justin and the others here were chosen to be finalists in the Canby School District cooking contest representing their school, 91 School. Justin is in front kneeling beside the 91 School Bulldog. Justin's recipe was Clam Chowder with Alaskan Halibut.

The Markus Girls

During our visit we were able to take care of Christy's Mom (and Dad) by cooking some meals and tending to Mom's needs - as she just had shoulder surgery the week before. Here Christy gets the chance to cuddle under the warm quilt and near the cozy wood stove with Mom - Cheryl.
